CerMark is a product that allows you to mark uncoated metal with a CO2 laser.  The heat energy from the laser fuses the CerMark coating to the metal to create a durable black mark.  Some of the metals that can be marked using CerMark are stainless steel, tool steel, chrome, pewter, titanium and aircraft grade aluminum.  Harder metals work best with this process.
